Open HandoutsCleopatra is dead. Rome and Parthia struggle for control of the Fertile Crescent in a bid for world domination, while local politics in the Middle Kingdoms become increasingly divisive. The prophecies of the so-called “Messiah” have long been forgotten, and an ancient Evil lurks in the shadows, corrupting the hearts of humankind. Three of the wisest mystics known as the “Magi” travelled to Bethlehem following a star they believed to be a sign. They never returned. Hope grows dim as the world descends into darkness. What we need are answers... and those brave enough to seek them.

A Loremaster is the person who runs the game. In traditional Dungeons & Dragons this role is called the Dungeon Master (DM). However, the term “Dungeon Master” specifically refers to someone running an official Dungeons & Dragons game. This adventure uses the 5e rules system but is not itself a D&D game.
The more general term is “Game Master,” but the word “game” usually implies something that can be won or lost, which doesn’t fully describe what is happening here. The focus of this experience is the world, story, and lore of the setting. For that reason the term Loremaster is used.
The Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible is a 5e-compatible sandbox adventure module set in the first century, in the same region and timeframe as Jesus’ earthly ministry. It began as a Kickstarter project in 2022 and provides a ready-to-run toolkit—locations, maps, NPCs, monsters, and encounter design—so you can play in that world while still using standard 5e rules.
The Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible is available for purchase on DriveThruRPG. You can find it here: Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible.
You don’t necessarily need to know the Bible to play. The campaign is designed to let players experience the epic stories of the Bible through adventure, so it assumes players may already have a general familiarity with some of those stories. Even someone with no background in the Bible can still enjoy a classic “good vs evil” adventure, while encountering references and ideas that they may later recognize as coming from Scripture.
No. Only the Loremaster needs to own the Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible, and the Loremaster running the game already has a copy. Players can simply show up ready to play.
Yes, but this is also a great place to learn. The game uses standard 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and new players are welcome. If you’re still learning the system, the table is a good environment to pick it up as you play.
No. Players create their own characters who live in the world of the first century during the time of Jesus’ ministry. The story takes place alongside the events of the Bible, but the player characters are original people whose adventures unfold within that setting.
Yes. The adventure takes place during the same time and in the same region as the events of the New Testament, so players may encounter people who appear in the Bible as part of the story.
Players have meaningful agency in the story and their choices can affect many of the events happening around them. However, major events recorded in Scripture—such as the crucifixion—are part of the historical framework of the setting and will still occur. The adventure unfolds alongside the biblical narrative rather than rewriting it.
Yes. The setting and story are designed to treat the biblical world and its themes with respect. The goal is to explore the setting through adventure while maintaining a tone that honors the source material.
Game sessions are typically short and focused. Recently, sessions have not exceeded two hours.
Both. The game takes place in the Loremaster’s game room, but players at home can join remotely. Remote players will need a headset, microphone, Discord, and a stable internet connection. The table uses miniatures and maps, and remote players will be able to see the game table through the camera feed.
No. Expect Scripture-forward themes and respectful play.
The campaign is based on the published adventure module Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible. It uses the standard 5e rules system but is set in a biblical sandbox world rather than a traditional fantasy setting.
No. The focus is on storytelling and adventure within the biblical world. Scripture and its themes naturally shape the setting, but the experience is driven by narrative and player choices rather than sermons.
Game sessions are scheduled periodically and announced through the community channels. Players can join either in person in the Loremaster’s game room or remotely through Discord.
